Her sympathy towards Cassio makes Iago's lies more credible and it is her naïve attitude that makes her an easy target as to being the antagonist in the play of Othello. Despite her strength at the beginning of Othello, Desdemona slowly loses her independence she once had. When Desdemona argues the defense of Cassio and tries to encourage Othello to rethink his title as being lieutenant, Othello lets Desdemona know that he will not obey her and do what she wants.

Her death in the novel symbolizes an innocent death corrupted by lies and betrayal since she is the only pure figure in the novel, she was an independent and obedient wife to Othello. Desdemona represents a very feminine character, she represents a wife and a daughter, her role in this play is determined by the relationship she has with the male characters, and goes out of her way to help them, even on bad terms with Othello she was loyal and honest. She represented being pure. She still did was she believed was the right thing to do, she explained "Yes, faith, so humbled that he hath left parts of his grief with me to suffer with him. Good love call him back... shall I deny you?. |
